B1-5 Graduates Program

Shimmy and shake your way through our Graduates Program! Upon successful completion of Burlesque 1-5, you’ll receive a certificate of completion, a chance to perform in our Student Showcase, and earn the esteemed title of Playful Peacock Graduate. The Graduates Program now has a SPRING and FALL start with a celebratory Student Showcase at the end of the season. Students are not required to perform to gain their certificate. To complete the program, register for each level individually.

B1  Burlesque Beginnings | Saturdays 2:00-3:30 | Fleur De Lita

Welcome to burlesque! This 4-week series is an inviting introduction to the world of burlesque and is geared toward all levels. You'll learn vocabulary, classic burlesque moves, a bit about burlesque history, its legendary women, and even create your own stage name! This course provides a modern context for burlesque and is the foundation for all other classes we offer. No dance experience necessary. No prerequisite. Register in advance and save!

B2  Tease Techniques | Saturdays 2:00-3:30 | Bettie Beware

Explore burlesque techniques as you continue your journey in this series. Strut, shimmy, bump-n-grind, and much more! No dance experience necessary. Wear comfortable dance clothes and bring high heels.

B3  Props & Special Skills | Saturdays 2:00-3:30 | Scarlette Revolver / Dahlia Dulce / Ophelia Flame

Build on your foundational studies in this 4-week sampler platter of burlesque goodies. Each week will explore a special skill or prop, including, fans, chairs, feather boas and so much more! No dance experience necessary. Props will be announced each week. Wear comfortable dance clothes and bring high heels to every class. Register in advance and save!

B4  Peeling & Revealing | Saturdays 2:00-3:30 | Nadi A’marena

No matter if your goal is to amuse, shock, or titillate, the way you choose to conceal and reveal can make or break your act. The goal of this class is to build knowledge and confidence in artful disrobing. In this 4-week series, you will learn a burlesque number from beginning to end, with an intensive focus on peeling and revealing. We will discuss intention, transitions, building suspense, showing off the layers of your costume, methods for smooth disrobing. 

What to wear: Short or long dress with zipper down the back, bra with a back fastener, high heels, and pasties (available for sale). Clothing can be fancy or plain. Boas & gloves are available in class, but you are welcome to bring your own. There will be disrobing in this class but is not required. Register in advance and save! 

B5  Solo For Stage & Boudoir | Saturdays 2:00-3:30 | Ophelia Flame

Do you yearn for the limelight? Starting your very first solo act? Revisiting an unfinished piece or one that didn't quite work?  Well then, it's showtime for you! In this 10-week session, you will develop a solo act from start to finish. No matter where you are in the creative process, this 10-week intensive series is the perfect place for you to get the guidance you need in a supportive environment. 

Ophelia Flame offers expertise and inspiration, helping you better understand your direction, what needs attention, and how to make decisions. We'll discuss the process from start to finish, including concept, music selection, costuming, choreography, stage presence and more. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a notebook and a pair of heels. At the end of your series, students will be eligible to perform in the student showcase held in June 2018.  Space is limited; advance registration is strongly encouraged.

Dance for Everybody | Saturdays 3:30-4:30 | Queenie Von Curves

Love the body you have and make it work for YOU! Join the incomparable QUEENIE VON CURVES for a dance class with a little burlesque sass. The series incorporates fun, fitness, and several dance forms, including jazz, ballet, modern, and more. All levels are welcome in this nurturing environment. This dance class is for EVERY BODY! Register in advance and you'll save $20! Wear fitness clothes & athletic shoes. Walk-ins welcome.

Self Care & Body Aware | Sundays 12:00-12:55 | Dr Pedi Bourgeois

Taking care of YOU is incredibly sexy!!! DR. PEDI BOURGEOIS gentle, restorative class is great for improving flexibility, posture, and balance, managing pain and performance anxiety, and feeling at ease in your own skin. Drawing on Awareness Through Movement® lessons and meditative techniques, you’ll come away feeling confident, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the world. No experience necessary--all are welcome!

Chair Flow | Sundays 1:30-2:30 | Kinsey S. Kale

Come discover the magic of chair dance skills and learn what this simple apparatus can do to amp up your choreo and performances. Kinsey S. Kale will lead you through eight separate lessons on how bodies of all sizes and dances of all styles can benefit from chair dynamics. Each class will be one part skills and one part chair flow to a different style of music each week. Great for beginners or experienced performers.

SERIES INTENSIVES

Nerdlesque Intensive | Sundays 1:00-2:30 | Mar 3 - May 5 | Mona Montague

That’s right, it’s nerdy burlesque! Nerdlesque encomapsses sci-fi, geek culture, comics, gaming, history, literature, and more! Get your nerd on with expert Mona Montague, who will show you how to create a nerdlesque act without alienating those who aren’t familiar with the reference material. (Alien-ating, get it?) Walk-ins welcome!

G1 | GroupTease | Sundays 2:30-4:00 | Gina Louise

Let's move together! Learn a fun group burlesque number from veteran instructor Gina Louise, who specializes in ensemble choreography for all levels to enjoy. Group performance opportunity, no experience required! All genders welcome! GroupTease is divided into three sections: Choreography, Costume Creation, and Stage Readiness. The three-part series is an excellent precursor to creating a solo act, and the goal is to build dance skills, confidence, and community. Wear comfortable dance clothing. If you wish, bring heels and long gloves. Movement & wardrobe will be customized to fit the strengths and character of each individual in the group.

Note: Students are welcome to register for any session, but only those who complete the entire G1-3 series are eligible to perform in our 2019 Student Showcase.

G2 | Costume Creation | Sundays 2:30-4:00 | Gina Louise

Create a dazzling burlesque costume from start to finish, no sewing required! Join the 8-week series and or choose your favorite weekly topics a la carte. Costume Creation is open to ALL students! We will discuss costume vision, resources, budget, and the unique needs of designing for burlesque choreography. You will be guided step-by-step through the process of creating a DIY burlesque costume, every layer, from head-to-toe. 

Some trims and craft materials provided. Bring your own base items, noted in the weekly descriptions below. We will be working with glue, paint, and other crafting materials, so wear suitable clothing. Please be patient as we will be sharing tools in class. You are welcome to bring your own crafting kit with any of the following: scissors, pins, needle, thread, glue, setting wand, hot glue gun, etc. E6000 Fabri-Fuse is allowed, but please do not bring regular E6000 as we will be in an enclosed space.

Week 1: PLAN YOUR COSTUME (March 3)
Visualize your dream costume, then make it a reality! Learn about budgeting, local and online resources, DIY techniques, how to customize off-the-rack items, and when to hire a professional. This class gives you the tools to plan your costume while avoiding hidden costs and other pitfalls. Bring note taking materials.

Week 2: BEDAZZLE IT (March 10)
Elevate your off-the-rack items from blah to wow! Learn how to customize using embellishments, rhinestones, dyes, and paints to create a unique costume worthy of the stage. We will focus on adhering rhinestones, with plenty of time to practice different techniques and patterns. Use fabric supplied in class, or bring a small project of your own (such as bra, phone case, household object, etc.) to bedazzle with rhinestones. Shared tools and materials available for use. Bring your own supplies if you have specific colors in mind.

Week 3: PASTIES & TASSELS (March 24)
Make your very own pasties from start to finish! We’ll discuss different techniques, materials, shapes, sizes, and tassels. Shared tools and materials available for use. Bring your own supplies if you have specific colors in mind.

Week 4: SHOES (March 31)
Stop searching for that elusive pair of perfect shoes! Learn how to customize your own shoes to bring your unique vision to life, while saving time and money. Trims and crystals provided in class for you to use. Bring a pair of shoes to customize, plus your own materials if you have specific colors in mind.

Week 5: TOPS & BOTTOMS (April 7)
Embellish the top and bottom of your costume for beautifully balanced look! We’ll discuss patterns, designs, and techniques. There will be plenty of time to work on your own project. Shared tools and materials available for use. Bring a corset, bra, vest, blazer, undies, shorts, etc. to customize, plus your own supplies if you have specific colors in mind.

Week 6: GLOVES (April 14)
Customize your gloves and elevate your costume! We’ll discuss patterns, designs, and techniques. There will be plenty of time to work on your own project. Shared tools and materials available for use. Bring a pair of gloves to customize, plus your own supplies if you have specific colors in mind.

Week 7: HEADPIECE (April 28)
Top your costume with a unique headpiece! We’ll discuss designs, materials, and ways to ensure your headpiece stays on during performance. Shared tools and materials available for use. Bring your own supplies if you have specific colors in mind.

Week 8: COHESIVE COSTUME (May 5)
Put it all together! Bring your entire costume and make sure the look is cohesive, balanced, and polished. Make corrections, add finishing touches, and attend to every detail for a flawless costume head to toe! Shared tools and materials available for use. Bring your own supplies if you have specific needs.
Note: Students who complete the entire group dance and costume series are eligible to perform in our 2019 Student Showcase.

G3 | Get Stage Ready | Sundays 2:30-4:00 | May 19 - June 9 | Gina Louise

You know the choreography, your costume is complete, and now it's time to bring it all together for the stage! Specifically designed for students who have completed G1-2, this final course in the series focuses on performance preparation, entering and exiting the stage, and dealing with jitters. Get Stage Ready (G3) is the final connection between choreography and costume, the ultimate dress rehearsal and confidence boost!

Note: G3 is required for those who plan to perform the group number in our Spring Student Showcase.

POLICIES

Classes are open to everyone, age 18 and up. Classes are 50-­minutes long unless otherwise stated. We reserve the right to cancel classes for any reason. Every effort will be made to notify students of a canceled class well in advance, but this is not always possible. If we cancel a class you will receive a full refund of the class fee. Fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable. There are no credits or refunds unless the class is canceled. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. The Playful Peacock Academy and its instructors are not liable for injuries sustained or illnesses contracted by the student while attending the school. Dance classes involve moderate to high energy exercise. It is recommended that students know their health status and any limitations on their ability to safely participate in classes.

The Playful Peacock promotes artistic originality. Through our instruction, students learn to recognize the differences between inspiration and plagiarism and its negative effects on the performance community. The academy owns its curriculum, teaching methods, written materials, group choreography, and costumes. Students agree not to use PPA intellectual property for their own performance or teaching. The academy guides student performers to create unique, personalized acts. Therefore, all solo costumes and acts developed at The Playful Peacock belong solely to the individual performer. Students are free to call the act their own and perform it wherever they please.
